Genuine PSS Type A dripless shaft seal for a 1-3/4" (44.5 mm) propeller shaft and a 3" stern tube. Its nitrile bellows fits a stern tube outside diameter of 3" to 3-1/8" (76.2–79.4 mm).

How to measure

  1. Measure across the bare propeller shaft with callipers, at a clean, unworn section. This seal is for a 1-3/4" shaft (44.5 mm).
  2. Measure the outside diameter of the stern tube where the bellows will clamp over it. This seal fits 3" to 3-1/8" (76.2–79.4 mm).
  3. If your stern tube measures outside that range, choose the size below whose range covers it, or call us and we'll confirm the fit.

How the PSS Type A is built

The PSS Type A is made by PYI Inc in the USA and supplied assembled, ready to fit. It is a mechanical face seal:

  1. Transmission turns the shaft
  2. Shaft coupling spins
  3. PSS rotor spins with the shaft
  4. Carbon flange stays still
  5. Bellows stays still, holds the faces together
  6. Stern tube the shaft log
  7. Propeller shaft spins

  • Stainless-steel rotor

    A 316L stainless-steel rotor clamps to the 1-3/4" propeller shaft, sealed to it by two o-rings and held by two pairs of set screws.

  • Carbon flange

    The rotor spins against a stationary carbon flange.

  • Nitrile bellows

    A nitrile rubber bellows sized for a 3" stern tube clamps over the stern tube with hose clamps, and its pre-load keeps the two faces together.

  • Water vent

    A hose-barb vent feeds water to the faces to lubricate and cool them.

Inspect the bellows regularly and replace it about every six years with the PSS Maintenance Kit. Read the installation guide before fitting.

  • Postage

    Australia Post Express Post for one seal is $32.95, GST included. Checkout confirms the postage for your delivery postcode.

  • Dispatch

    In-stock seals are dispatched from Mornington, Victoria on business days. Allow 1–7 business days for delivery after dispatch.

  • Change-of-mind returns

    Returns within 30 days of delivery if the seal is unused and not fitted, in its original packaging. You pay the return postage, and a flat $25 restocking fee applies.

  • Faulty, damaged or incorrect items

    We arrange the return at our cost and give you a full refund or a replacement.
